Et on continue les visites avec cette fois le petit Museum d'Histoire Naturelle d'Aix et ses dinosaures, puisque la ville a été construite sur un site jadis occupé par ces charmantes bestioles... On retrouve encore aujourd'hui, en se baladant en Sainte Victoire, de nombreux fragments d'oeufs de dinosaures.


More culture, with this tour of this small Museum in Aix, with its dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Those charming creatures used to live in the Aix area millions of years ago, and pieces of dinosaur eggs can still be easily found on certain spots around Sainte Victoire Mountain.

1000 years back in time

Un retour mille ans en arrière avec la visite du Château de La Barben, près de Salon de Provence. / Back 1000 years ago, with this tour of la Barben Castle, near Salon de Provence.

Visite extraordinaire des salles basses du château (Xème/XIème siècle) guidée par un chevalier en tenue, qui nous a tenus tous les 6 en haleine pendant plus d'une heure. / Exciting tour of the lower part of the castle (Xth/XIth century) given by a fully dressed knight.

Puis un petit tour avec énigmes à décoder dans la partie plus récente (seulement XVI-XVIIème celle-là...) guidé par un gentilhomme en habit - photos interdites, dommage ! / Followed by a visit and scavenger hunt in the upper and more recent part (XVI-XVIIth century only for this one) guided by a costumed gentleman - no pics allowed, too bad!

Valensole

Balade dans l'arrière-pays, sur le plateau de Valensole et dans le village, dont le seul nom évoque lavande et soleil =)

A tour around Valensole, 40 miles North of Aix, where lavender fields bloom and sun usually shines =)

Musée des Papillons

Au programme de ce 3ème jour de vacances, un petit tour au musée des Papillons, tenu par un passionné qui nous fait une visite guidée privée passionnante. / For this 3d day of vacation, I had planned to discover a small Butterfly Museum near Aix, where the enthousiastic owner and explorer gave us a fascinating guided tour.

Tellement passionné qu'il a même découvert ce papillon au Sri-Lanka il y a quelques année, et lui a donc transmis son nom (l'Olepa Duboisi pour Monsieur Dubois). / He even discovered, a few years ago, an unknown type of butterfly, which has been named after him (Olepa Duboisi for Mr Dubois)

Cotton Candy Break

Une petite virée à la fête foraine du coin avec option Barbapapa au Coca (si si !) pour bien démarrer les vacances - Coke-flavored cotton candy time at the nearby fair, for a good winter break start.

Handball game

Un match de handball en famille ce soir, avec sous-titrage par Jon, notre pivot Islandais préféré qui, blessé au genou, est cantonné aux gradins... Il va falloir revenir pour l'admirer sur le terrain - ce qui fera peut-être gagner son équipe cette fois =)

Tonight is hand ball game night for us all, with Jon, our favorite Islandic pivot, as a sports analyst with us in the bleachers - grounded for a knee injury. We'll have to do it again to watch him play - which might help his team win, this time =)

Et après le match, c'est les enfants qui s'entrainent à marquer. / And after the game, it's the kids' turn.

8 ans pour Alice

Cross country race

Première compétition d'athlétisme pour Romain. Et pendant que les uns courent... / This week-end was Romain's first cross country race. And while some are running...

...d'autres se font traîner tranquillou dans les rayons de Décathlon. / ...others get pulled in the aisles of a nearby sports store.

40 series

Dans la saga des 40, on continue avec le cap négocié cette fois par notre BanBan, marseillais national et grand fan de l'OM comme vous l'aurez deviné.

The 40 series continues. This time it's our friend BanBan's turn to take the step - he is native from Marseille, and a big fan of the blue and white OM soccer team as you might have guessed.

Une page se tourne

Et la deuxieme resolution de l'année : changer les plaques de la voiture, avec un an de retard quand même... Et voilà, adieu les plaques California, la Nicomobile est devenue française !

And here is the second resolution : switch to French license plates for Nick's car - after one and a half year it was about time. There it is now, the Californian "Nicomobile" has become French !

Balade inaugurale 2011

Les bonnes résolutions n'attendent pas : 2011 sera l'année de PLUS de balades. Voici donc l'inauguration, le 1er janvier : un tour en Ste Victoire en famille.

Ski, Surf & Snow

Une grosse semaine de ski à 22 avec toute ma famille, dans un chalet au pied des pistes à La Plagne, avec Noël à la clef. A noter : une vue imprenable sur la seule piste olympique de bobsleigh en France.

A whole week skiing, with 22 of us in a huge cabin in the heart of La Plagne resort - not to mention a great view on the only olympic bobsleigh racetrack in France. Christmas being of course the highlight of the week.

Tea time

Thanksgiving sauce Islandaise

Qui veut fêter Thanksgiving avec nous ? -- Personne ? -- Ah bon, personne ne fête Thanksgiving en France ?? Mais si, on en a trouvé des volontaires ! Ils sont islandais, mais c'est encore plus original, non ? Elle, Begga, a vécu plusieurs année aux US, et perpétue la tradition. Rencontrés par hasard, ils viennent d'arriver en France avec leurs deux enfants car Jon (prononcer "Yôn") qui est handballer professionnel, a décroché un contrat avec l'équipe d'Aix. Bon, la soirée ayant été trépidante, j'en ai oublié mon appareil... Mais vu la notoriété de Jon, pas dur de trouver une photo de sa frimousse - là par exemple.

A part ça, la dinde s'est transformée en poulet (avec stuffing et mashed potatoes, quand même !) et la pumpkin pie en gâteau poire-chocolat... Un peu atypique, non ?

Thanksgiving dinner, anyone? --- No?--- Come on... Nobody is celebrating Thankgiving in France, really?? Hey, wait, we found volunteers! From Iceland, but it's even more fun, right? I met them by chance, and they just arrived in Aix with their 2 kids as Jon, a professional handballer, has been selected to play with the Aix team. As for Begga, she has lived in the States many years, and likes to perpetuate the tradition. Well, we had such a good time that I forgot to shot pics of the evening... But given that Jon is a celebrity here, it's quite easy to find a picture of his face - here for example.
Apart from that, chicken made up for turkey and chocolate-an-pear cake for pumpkin pie... Quite unusual, isn't it?

Paris getaway

Et pendant que la famille se tue à la tâche en ramassant les olives, voilà que Sixtine s'offre un petit w-e à Paris avec sa marraine préférée, avec au programme le Louvre et Eurodisney. Allez savoir pourquoi, elle n'a pris de photos qu'à Eurodisney ??

And while we're exerting ourselves picking olives, Sixtine treats herself to a nice week-end in Paris with her godmother, featuring Le Louvre and Disneyland tour. I wonder why the only pics she brought back are from Disneyland ??
